NNSA Award

What is it?

The National Navigation Award Scheme is is a personal, non competitive scheme for all ages to learn navigational skills and gain confidence to get out and enjoy the countryside.

Who is it for?

Courses are officially acknowledged by a NNAS certificate and is useful to DofE supervisors, teachers and leaders who may be developing skills towards national governing body awards (e.g. Lowland leaders) or anyone who wants to get out and about in lowland countryside areas. 

How long is the course?

Bronze award is run over 2 days on a 1 to 1, 1 to 2, or 1 to small group basis and covers compass work, basic map interpretation, navigation in the countryside using tracks, paths and other linear features. 

Learning outcomes

Bronze NNAS award - the learning outcomes 

  • Navigate using a variety of maps and scales 
  • Use 4 and 6 figure grid references with worded descriptions to define the position of a map feature and locate the feature on the ground
  • Orientate the map using hand rails, obvious point features and major land forms 
  • Use linear features (e.g. paths, tracks and boundaries) as hand rails in simple navigation exercises 
  • Relate prominent land forms such as large hills and valleys to corresponding contour information on the map
  • Orientate the map by aligning a compass needle against grid north and be aware that magnetic variation causes inaccuracy 
  • Use an orientated map to confirm direction of travel 
  • Use clearly identifiable features to confirm position along the route and to recognise when the target has been overshot
  • Measure horizontal distance on the map and estimate distance on the ground using timing, pacing and simple visual judgements e.g. 100m
  • Plan and implement simple routes and navigation strategies based on the skills above.
  • Recognise a navigation error within a few minutes and apply simple relocation techniques using hand rails and prominent features 
  • Demonstrate an awareness of local and national access issues, access legislation, personal responsibilities, and the Countryside Code 
  • Demonstrate appropriate knowledge of walking equipment, safety equipment and emergency procedures. 

What you will need

All map reading equipment is provided. Course details are sent a couple of weeks before the start date and will include comprehensive details on what to bring and how to get to the start location.

Bronze Navigators Award

The Bronze Award covers the essential map reading skills. You'll learn about using “handrail features”, like paths and walls, to guide you along your way. You will also learn the basics of how to use a compass and how to use it with your map to ensure you don’t get lost. A bronze course will take you from relying on

A bronze course will take you from relying on friends or guidebooks to being able to plan a walk and follow it successfully.

Silver Navigator Award

On a Silver Navigator Award course, you’ll start to leave the paths behind. You'll navigate in open country on short bearings. As your confidence increases you’ll learn more advanced compass skills and add timing and pacing into the mix too.

Silver courses take place on more difficult terrain and away from easy-to-follow paths and trails.

Gold Navigator Award

The Gold Navigator Award marks the pinnacle of your navigation skills. You will be happy and familiar with all the bronze and silver skills and now wanting to get even more out of your navigation. The Gold Award is all about reading the landscape and comparing it to the ground. You’ll use contour features to enable you

The Gold Award is all about reading the landscape and comparing it to the ground. You’ll use contour features to enable you to identify where you are on your walk and be able to navigate to small and subtle contour features.`

If you’re looking to complete a Walking or Mountain Skills course, then the skills learnt on a Gold Award course will be invaluable.

Tent&Trek Navigators award

What is it?

The Navigators Award is our own navigational skills award for those who wish to begin or become more confident with their map reading skills.

Who's it for

Our award is for anyone who wishes to gain skills in map reading or enhance existing skills 

How long is it

We offer the options of both 1 and 2 day courses for this award according to level of experience required.

What you will learn.

-Learn the jargon and some map keys 

- Gain knowledge of walking equipment, safety equipment and emergency procedures

-Gain knowledge of the countryside code 

-Map orientation using compass and features located on the ground

-Use 4 and 6 figure grid references 

-Use linear features for example paths and tracks as hand rails 

-Recognise navigational errors and understand how to correct them using relocation skills 

-Plan simple routes using the skills above.
